BMW Recalls Over 1.3 Million Vehicles in China Due to Takata Airbag Safety Risks

BMW is undertaking a significant recall in China, affecting more than 1.3 million vehicles due to concerns over potentially defective Takata airbag inflators. This recall comes on the heels of a similar action in the United States. Where BMW also addressed issues related to Takata airbags.

The recall involves nearly 600,000 vehicles manufactured in China between 2005 and 2017. As well as over 750,000 imported vehicles produced between 2003 and 2018. According to the Chinese State Administration for Market Regulation. The affected models include a wide range of BMW’s lineup. From Series 1 to Series 6 cars, as well as X1, X3, X4, X5, and X6 SUVs.

The Dangers of Takata Airbag Inflators

The primary concern with the Takata airbag inflators is the risk of explosion during airbag deployment. In such an event, the inflator can rupture. Sending metal fragments into the vehicle cabin, posing a serious risk of injury to the occupants. The Chinese regulatory body has indicated that a small number of vehicles in the recall might have Takata inflators if the owner had previously changed the steering wheel.

Takata airbag inflators have been linked to numerous fatalities worldwide, with at least 35 deaths reported in the United States, Malaysia, and Australia since 2009. The defect has led to one of the largest automotive recalls in history, affecting multiple car manufacturers globally.

Global Impact and Regulatory Response

In the United States, BMW had already announced a recall of more than 390,000 vehicles due to concerns that the original steering wheel. That might have been replaced with a sport or M-sport steering wheel. Which could be equipped with a Takata inflator. BMW’s Response and Next Steps for Owners

BMW has assured its customers in China that they can visit any authorized dealer to have their steering wheel inspected. Alternatively, owners can upload a photo of their steering wheel along with their vehicle identification number (VIN). To receive a confirmation within two weeks. For those vehicles found to be affected, BMW will replace the driver’s side airbag at no cost.

This recall serves as a reminder of the importance of addressing safety issues promptly and thoroughly. Vehicle owners are encouraged to take the necessary steps to ensure their safety by having their vehicles inspected and repaired if needed.
